INSTRUCTIONS TO THE AUTHORS

 

 

 

The articles sent to the Herediana Medical Journal should deal with subjects related to the Public Health and Biomedical area, and be original and unpublished.

ON THE PRESENTATION

The article should be presented accompanied with a letter addressed to the Editorial Chief of the Herediana Medical Journal, requesting the evaluation for publication. The letter should include the title of the work, the full name of the authors and type of work. The letter should be signed by one of the authors.

A sworn statement signed by all the authors should be enclosed (according to the established format), that the article presented is intellectual property of the authors and that it has not been published nor presented for evaluation to another journal, yielding the copyright to the Herediana Medical Journal, once the article is accepted for publication.

An original printed version and the electronic version of the article on diskette or CD-R should be delivered together with the letter of introduction.

ON THE ARTICLE

The article should belong to one of the following categories:
- Original research
- Short communication
- Communication of clinical cases
- Letter to the Editor

Form and preparation of manuscripts

The article should be written in Spanish, Portuguese or English, printed matter in ISOA4 (212x297 mm)white bond paper, single face, Times New Roman font, size 12, double-spaced, with 25 mm margins. The decimal fractions should be separated from the whole numbers with decimal comma and the thousands and millions should be separated by a simple space. In the text in English, the decimal fractions are separated from the entire ones with a period. Each part of the article should begin in a separate page, numbered consecutively. In case of textual quotations, the corresponding paragraph within the text will stand out placing it between quotation marks or writing it with italics. The tables, figures, and graphics with their corresponding title are placed at the end of the text in separate pages; they should not be inserted within the text.

Page of the Title

The page of the title should contain: Title of the article in the original language (Spanish or Portuguese) and in English, full name of the author, or authors, institution where the study was conducted and the address of the correspondence.

The name of the author or authors should follow the following order: Paternal surname, maternal surname, and names. The names of the authors should be separated among themselves by a comma. The name of the author should be placed after the Title or obtained Academic Degree and the appeal for the institutional affiliation in Arabic numbers in superscript.

The name of the institution or institutions to which the author has affiliation, is placed after the last author and in a separate paragraph, preceded by the corresponding number in superscript.

For the correspondence, the name of the author in charge, address, postal code, and E-mail should be placed. The telephone number can be placed in addition.

Page of Declaration of Financing and of Conflicts of Interests
The financial source should be placed in this page: Economic support received in the form of grant, donation of equipment, or contribution of drugs and another type of support, and the possible conflictss of interests of the author or authors, whether of economic, institutional, labor or personal order.


PRESENTATION SCHEMES

Original Research


They should be presented maintaining the following order:
- Page of the Title
- Page of Declaration of Financing and of Conflicts of Interests
- Summary
- Introduction
- Material and methods
- Results
- Discussion
- Bibliographic references

The total extension of the manuscript, including the bibliographic references, should not exceed 14 pages, a single face (It does not include tables, figures and figures). A maximum of ten tables, figures, or graphics is accepted.
The summary should be presented in a separate sheet and with a maximum length of 250 words. They should include the following subtitles: Objective, material, and methods, results and conclusions. At the end 3 to 6 key words should be added, to help classify the article.

The key words should be descriptors in Health Sciences (DECS), which can be consulted in: http://wwwdecs.bvs.br/E/decswebe.htm and in English in MeSH of PubMed.

The objective of the study is placed at the end of the introduction, clearly and concisely.

The bibliographic references are placed in parentheses, in the same font size and in order of appearance. The maximum number of bibliographic references permitted is 40.

Short communications or clinical cases:

They should be presented maintaining the following order:

- Page of the Title
- Page of Declaration of Financing and of Conflicts of Interests
- Summary
- Introduction
- Material and methods or Contents (case or clinical cases)
- Discussion
- Bibliographic references

The total extension of the work, including the bibliographic references, should not exceed six pages written in a single face (It does not include tables, figures and figures) A maximum of six tables, figures or graphics is accepted.

The summaries (in the original and English language) are presented each on separate sheets, with a maximum extension of 150 words and should be written in a single paragraph. 3 key words should be added at the en, to help classify the article. Key words should be descriptors in Health Sciences (DECS), which can be consulted in:

and in English in MeSH of PubMed.
Bibliographic references are placed in parentheses, in the same font size and in order of appearance. The maximum number of bibliographic references is 20.

Letters to the editor

They should be written according to the following scheme:
- Letter
- Bibliographic references

The total length of the document should be two pages and as a maximum two tables, figures or graphics will be accepted. Bibliographic references are placed in parentheses, in the same font size and in order of appearance. The maximum bibliographic references are 10.

ON THE TABLES, GRAPHICS, AND FIGURES

Tables should have a brief and clear title and should be numbered according to the order indicated in the text, for example Table N°1. The title of the table should be written in Times New Roman size12.

No vertical lines should be used in Tables, only three horizontal lines: one under the title, another one under the headings of the columns and the third at the end of the table.

The figures, graphics, and photos should be presented in JPG, GIF, or TIF format. If a scanner is used, a minimum printing resolution of 300 dpi is required, otherwise the photos or original figures should be enclosed.

The journal will publish black and white iconography; if the author prefers iconography in full color, a request for budget should be attached.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCES

Bibliographic references should be placed consecutively in order of appearance in the text and should be included in the corresponding list with complete bibliographic information at the end of the document. The bibliographic references will be written in accordance with the Standards of Vancouver. Immediately after citing, paraphrasing, or using any foreign material, the source that appears in the bibliographic references should be placed with an Arabic number in parentheses in the same size as the text; example: (1) or (2.5), without placing hyperlinks for the bibliographic references. The reference calls preceded by a space are placed before the period, comma, or another punctuation mark.
In the bibliographic reference list, only the references cited in the text of the article should be included. It is not allowed to mention personal communications, unpublished documents, or in press.

In the bibliographic references, research articles carried out should necessarily be included in the country or in Latin America, unless there are no studies related to the subject.

The article should have the author and/or coauthors’ surname, followed by the initials of the names, without separation or periods among themselves. The article should have the author and/or coauthors’ surname, followed by the initials of the names, without separation or periods among themselves. Up to six authors, separated by commas, can be cited; if there are more than six, the first three will be cited and "et al" will be added; the authors should be separated among themselves by a comma and a period should be placed at the end of the initial of the author’s last name. The title of the article should be cited afterwards, in the language of origin ending with a period and then the preposition "In" followed by a colon and the title of the book (both in the language of origin), period, city where it was published, name of the Editorial House, year of publication, colon and the pages in which the work appears.

The Author, as for the articles. Title of the work, followed by a period, to specify the degree obtained, period. Web pages mentioned in the bibliographic references should be accompanied by the date in which they were accessed.
