Social and Stylistic Stratification in the Speech Prosody of the Spanish of Mérida, Yucatán

Resumen El objetivo de este trabajo es mostrar la variación social y estilística en la prosodia enunciativa del español de Mérida, Yucatán. Se analizan enunciados aseverativos provenientes de entrevistas sociolingüísticas y de una encuesta de situaciones, considerando las variables sociales de edad, género y escolaridad. El análisis prosódico se lleva a cabo bajo los postulados del modelo métrico-autosegmental (Pierrehumbert 1980, Ladd 2008) y el sistema de notación Sp_ToBI (Hualde y Prieto 2015). Los resultados muestran que esta variedad de español se caracteriza por un prominente descenso a partir del primer pico tonal, el alineamiento temprano de algunos de los picos tonales en posición prenuclear y la presencia de algunas junturas no descendentes. La variación social y estilística sugiere que los dos últimos son rasgos que indizan vernacularidad.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to present the social and stylistic variation in the speech prosody of the Spanish of Mérida, Yucatán. Assertive utterances from sociolinguistic interviews and discourse completion tasks are analyzed considering the social variables of age, gender and educational level. The prosodic analysis is carried out within the Autosegmental Metrical model (Pierrehumbert 1980, Ladd 2008) and with the Sp_ToBi labeling conventions (Hualde & Prieto 2015). The results show that this variety of Spanish is characterized by a prominent descent starting from the first tonal peak, the early-peak alignment in some prenuclear positions, and the presence of some non-falling boundary tones. The social and stylistic variation suggests that the last two are features that indicate vernacularity.

Superdialectos, dialectos y subdialectos del español de Colombia

Resumen El objetivo de este trabajo es ofrecer una propuesta de clasificación dialectal del español de Colombia a partir del análisis dialectométrico de datos léxicos del Atlas Lingüístico-Etnográfico de Colombia (ALEC). El trabajo fue realizado con doscientos mapas léxicos del ALEC seleccionados aleatoriamente y procesados en el software de análisis dialectométrico Gabmap. La medida de similitud utilizada fue el Índice Relativo de Identidad (Goebl 1984) y la visualización fue realizada a partir del método de agrupamiento difuso. Desde el análisis de los resultados, se propone la división del español de Colombia en tres superdialectos: andino centro-oriental, andino centro-occidental y costeño. Los superdialectos andinos se dividen en dialectos de norte a sur teniendo en cuenta el continuum dialectal en dialectos alto, medio y bajo, mientras que el costeño se diferencia entre Caribe y Pacífico. Por último, se presentan veintidós subdialectos correspondientes a regiones específicas del país con sus respectivos municipios.

Abstract The objective of this work is to offer a proposal for the dialectal classification of Colombian Spanish based on the dialectometric analysis of lexical data from the Atlas Lingüístico-Etnográfico de Colombia (ALEC). The study involvedtwo hundred lexical maps from the ALEC which were randomly selected and processed in the Gabmap dialectometric analysis software. The similarity measure used was the Relative Index of Identity (Goebl 1984) and the visualization was carried out using the fuzzy clustering method. Based on the analysis of the results, the division of Colombian Spanish into three superdialects is proposed: central-eastern Andean, central-western Andean and Coastal. The Andean superdialects are divided from north to south (taking into account the dialect continuum) into high, middle and low dialects, while the Coastal superdialect distinguishes Caribbean and Pacific varieties. Finally, twenty-two subdialects corresponding to specific regions of the country are presented, along with their respective municipalities.

La investigación diacrónica sobre el español de Canarias: una visión historiográfica

Resumen Este artículo muestra el desarrollo de la investigación sobre la historia del español en Canarias desde una perspectiva dialectal e historiográfica. Se consideran tanto las aportaciones que conciben el estado actual de las hablas canarias como un proceso histórico ininterrumpido, como aquellas que parten de una metodología basada en la transcripción de documentos históricos. Esta segunda fase se enmarca, principalmente, en el “Proyecto del Estudio Histórico del Español de América”, dentro del marco de la Asociación de Lingüística y Filología de América Latina (ALFAL), desde 1993. En ambos casos, la relación bibliográfica servirá de status quaestionis en esta parcela de la investigación canaria. Hoy contamos con un amplio panorama bibliográfico que muestra cómo ha sido el español canario en su evolución histórica en el marco de la expansión castellana hacia el Atlántico desde comienzos del siglo XV.

Abstract This article presents the development of research on the history of the Spanish language in the Canary Islands from a dialectal and historiographical perspective. We have considered both the contributions that conceive the current state of Canarian speech as an uninterrupted historical process, as well as those that rely on a methodology based on the transcription of historical documents. The latter are mainly part of the “Project for the Historical Study of Spanish in America”, carried out by the Asociación de Lingüística y Filología de América Latina (ALFAL) since 1993. In both cases, the bibliographical relationship will serve as the status quaestionis in this field of Canarian research. Today we have an extensive bibliographic panorama that shows how Canarian Spanish has evolved historically in the context of the Castilian expansion towards the Atlantic since the beginning of the 15th century.
