SANDOVAL, Luis and VARELA, Luis. Comparative study of functionality in third age patients seen at outpatient and impatient services. Rev Med Hered [online]. 1998, vol.9, n.4, pp.138-142. ISSN 1018-130X.
Objective: To compare the functional capability in elderly hospitalized patients and outpatients. Material and methods: We included 84 elderly outpatients who consulting for first time and 84 elderly hospitalized patients with acute disease of the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia between july to november 1997. We evaluated dependence using the Katz score of activities of daily living (ADL). Results: The mean age in ambulatory patients was 73.05 years and 77.08 in the hospitalized patients. In ambulatory 70.2% were female and 58.3% in hospitalized, the number of pathologies was 2.90 in ambulatory and 3.84 in hospitalized, drugs consumption was 1.18 and 1.27 in ambulatory and hospitalized patients, respectively. The independence was 77.3% y 59.5% in ambulatory and hospitalized patients, respectively. Conclusions: We found a functional decline in the age group 70 to 79 years , with a relation between functional decline and age. The hospitalized group presented age and number of pathologic states greater than the ambulatory group. ( Rev Med Hered 1998; 9: 138-142 ).
