Objectives: To estimate the overall mortality and mortality related to types of weaning from mechanical ventilation as well as to describe factors related to failure in weaning in an intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: An observational study was carried-out among 147 patients undergoing weaning from mechanical ventilations who were admitted with the diagnosis of acute respiratory failure to the intensive care unit of Hospital Cayetano Heredia in 2014. Results: overall mortality in weaned patients was 27%; higher mortality (42%) was observed among those with prolonged weaning, followed by those with difficult weaning (29%) and simple weaning (15%, p=0.039). The overall mortality increased with longer stay at ICU and longer duration of mechanical ventilation. Factors related to failure in achieving weaning were low level of conscience (Glasgow coma score <8) and agitation (p=0,018). Conclusions: Prolonged weaning was associated to increased mortality in patients on mechanical ventilation due to acute respiratory failure. Factors related to weaning failure were related to the level of conscience.
