Research and Development (R&D) are essential in the search for solutions to global challenges. Aware of this importance and other associated advantages, companies have developed strategies that incorporate R&D into their operations. To address trends in this area, a systematic review and scientometric analysis were conducted in Scopus of papers published between 2018 and 2022 study identified three types of trends: consolidated, intermediate and emerging; as well as three brand new sub-themes of business R&D research: emerging technologies, open innovation and patents. The research reveals the significance of emerging technologies in business R&D and emphasizes the need to address the ethical and legal challenges they pose. The open innovation strategy is presented as valuable for companies seeking external collaboration, while patent protection remains essential to safeguard investments and maintain competitive advantage. It is suggested that organizations consider combining patents with other intellectual property mechanisms to extend the protection of their innovations.
