Abstract

RAMIREZ FARIAS, Tania Lucía. The social upheaval in the concentrated written press in Peru (2022-2023). Discursos del sur [online]. 2023, n.12, pp.101-132.  Epub Dec 05, 2023. ISSN 2617-2283.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15381/dds.n12.27096.

In Peru, the written press market is an oligopoly dominated by a few corporations that operate under high levels of mistrust of the media by the citizenry. In this context, this paper examines the front covers of written press media during the first phase of the wave of protests in Peru (December, 2022-March, 2023). In line with the “protest paradigm” theory on the relation between the press and social movements, a critical analysis of the coverage of the six larger newspapers is conducted, based on their front cover pages as an indicator of their editorial lines. The text analysis shows the most common devices of protest delegitimatization, demonization of participants and the type of coverage to state repression. The quantitative work finds that although front cover pages of all newspapers in the study resorted to a greater or lesser extent to delegitimatization devices, variables such as the affinity to the government in power and the tabloid character can influence the probability of delegitimizing the protest.
