Abstract
AGUIRRE CASTANEDA, Roxana et al. Influencia del tratamiento quirúrgico de la próstata sobre la función renal en pacientes con insuficiencia renal crónica secundaria a hiperplasia prostática benigna. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2002, vol.13, n.3, pp.99-104. ISSN 1018-130X.
Objective: To assess the influence of the surgical treatment over the renal function in patients with Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) caused by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Material and methods: This is a descriptive, retrospective, analytic case series study. The main result variable was the creatinine delta (postsurgery creatinine - presurgery creatinine), negative creatinine delta results were catalogued as improvement of renal function and positive creatinine delta results as damage of renal function. Results: From 40 cases, 24 fulfill the inclusion criteria. The media age was 67.2 ± 6.8 years old. The most frequent symptom was the thin uroflow present in 20(83.3%) patients. Thirteen (54.17%) patients had a medium prostate, these ones and those with a big prostate presented the urinary frequency symptom (p=0.03) more frequently. The surgical treatment of patients with CRF caused by BPH produced an improvement of renal function in 83% of the cases. Only 4 (16.67%) patients had a positive creatinine delta. It was found a direct correlation between age and the creatinine delta (r = 0.55) (p=0.04) which means an association between damage postsurgery renal function and age. Conclusions: The surgical treatment of patients with CRF caused by BPH produced an improvement of renal function in most of cases. Risk factors for a damage or improvement of the postsurgery renal function were not identified. (Rev Med Hered 2002; 13: 99-104).
