LLANOS ZAVALAGA, Luis Fernando; CONTRERAS RIOS, Carlos Enrique; VELASQUEZ HURTADO, Jose Enrique  y  PEINADO RODRIGUEZ, Jesus. Factors associated with health needs in five provinces of Cajamarca. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2004, vol.15, n.1, pp.11-18. ISSN 1018-130X.

Objective: To determine factors related to demand of health services in five provinces of rural area of Cajamarca, Perú . Material and Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was performed between December 1999 and January 2000. 369 households were selected and 1,916 people were inquired. A probabilistic and multi-stage sampling, for areas and independent in each study dominian survey was used. Demographic, educational, occupational aspects and those related with the access to the health services, according to the following characteristics: illness perception, medical consultation, and consultation to a establishment from the Ministerio de Salud. Logistic regression and probit were used to perform the statistical analysis. Results: 70.4% of the individuals deemed they were in a good health condition, 23.6% declared sickness or health problems or accidents in the last four weeks previous to the survey. From this group, 41.4% went for a medical consultation, 53.8% turned to a center from the Ministerio de Salud. Statistical association of illness perception with more advanced age, with the fact of being able to read and write; also being able to read and write was associated with seeking for healthcare in a center from the Ministerio de Salud; there was also an association with being female, a greater perception of disease and with having low income (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Epidemiological models are able to explain better illness peception and the likelihood for seeking medical consultation; nevertheless, for the selection of the consultation site, an econometric model is suggested.
