BERNABE ORTIZ, Eduardo; DELGADO-ANGULO, Elsa Karina y SANCHEZ-BORJAS, Pablo César. Results of a surveillance system for early childhood caries. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2006, vol.17, n.4, pp.227-233. ISSN 1018-130X.
Objective: To describe the results of a surveillance system, implemented with the students of the Facultad de Estomatologia Roberto Beltrán Neira, for early childhood caries (ECC) in children aged 6 to 36 months of underserved communities in Sol Naciente of Carabayllo. Materials and methods: 62 out of 97 children, who accepted to participate in the basal evaluation during the 2004-I semester, were reexamined after 12 (2005-I semester) and 18 months (2005-II semester) using the diagnostic criteria recommended by the World Health Organization. The results are presented as prevalence and incidence of ECC as well as dental caries experience (dmft and dmfs indexes). Results: ECC basal prevalence was of 24.2%, 8.2% y 2.6% per person, tooth and surface analysis unit respectively, with a dmft of 1.10 + 2.51 teeth and a dmfs of 1.50 + 3.71 surfaces. After 18 months, ECC incidence was of 4.3%, 2.6% y 1.3% per person, tooth and surface analysis unit respectively, with a significant increment of 0.32 teeth in the dmft (p<0.001) and of 0.74 surfaces in the dmfs (p=0.001). Conclusions: The present results indicate an early onset (moderate prevalence) and slow development (low incidence) of the ECC in children aged 6 to 36 months of the selected underserved communities. This information can be useful to plan future interventions with a preventive or restorative approach in this age group.
