Citizen trust levels in electoral processes and in electoral management bodies (EMB) are key elements when debating electoral integrity in democracies. This article aims to bring back the discussion about the relationship between the types of EMB institutional design in Latin America (governmental, mixed, or independent) and the levels of trust they hold. The data available from Latinobarómetro for 2017, 2018 and 2020 allow us to further study these factors in the countries of the region. This paper compares the EMB design in the three countries with the highest trust level (Costa Rica, Uruguay, and Colombia) against the three with the lowest trust levels (El Salvador, Paraguay, and Honduras). This study tests the theory that there is a linear relation between institutional design and citizen trust, while proposing to deepen the research on EMB design in the region, to identify other points in common and differences in these experiences.
