Objective: To quantify the costs for non executed discharges in HNCH for 2001 and 2002. Material and methods: Total costs (paid for and exonerated) for patients with non-executed discharges and daily in-hospital bed costs were quantified. Results: In HNCH, for years 2001 and 2002, respectively, 2 120 and 1 102 patients were discharged but they remained at the hospital; accounting for 6 871 and 3 017 additional days hospitalized. For years 2001 and 2002 , repectively, the total costs at the moment of discharge were US$ 538 692,57 and US$ 298 081,51; the amounts paid for were US$ 179 224,69 and US$ 144 740,47, and exonerated costs were US$ 359 467,88 and US$ 153 341,04, corresponding to 66,73 % and 51,44 % of the total amount to be charged. The average amounts for the cost exonerated to these patients were US$ 169,56 and US$ 139,15; and the sum of the daily in-hospital bed costs for the days the patients stayed at the hospital after being discharged were US$ 202 422,34 and US$ 100 483,56, respectively, for years 2001 and 2002. Conclusions: The unnecessary permanence of the patient at the hospital after being discharged generates a greater economic loss compared to totally or partially exonerating costs for the patients at the time of discharge.
