UNTOL PA, Roxana; ZAVALETA ESPEJO, Gina; SALDANA JIMENEZ, José  e  BLAS CERDAN, Willian. In vitro effect of hydroalcoholic extracts of Mangifera indica, Tamarindus indica and Cassia angustifolia on the growth of Salmonella typhi and Escherichia coli. Arnaldoa [online]. 2019, vol.26, n.2, pp.713-724. ISSN 1815-8242.  http://dx.doi.org/10.22497/arnaldoa.262.26213.

In vitro effect of hydroalcoholic extracts of Mangifera indica, Tamarindus indica and Cassia angustifolia on the growth of Salmonella typhi and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 was evaluated using a completely randomized factorial design. Hydroalcoholic extracts were obtained from the leaves of M. indica; T. indica and C. angustifolia using Soxhlet equipment with 90% alcohol, 50% and 25% concentrations were used for each extract and a mix at 50% and 25% of the three extracts. To evaluate the effect on bacterial growth the Kirby-Bauer method was used with 0.7 mm diameter Watman no. 4 paper discs, five discs were placed per plate for each concentration (extracts and the mix plus the positive control (ciprofloxacin)), incubating at 37 ºC for 24 hours, then the diameter of the inhibition zones was measured. The results show significant differences between the effect of the extracts and greater effect with the extract of M. indica with an inhibition halo of 16.53 mm for S. typhi and 15.16 for E. coli at the 50% concentration,; this would be possible due to mangiferin, a polyphenol that would produce growth inhibition.
