Abstract

ROJAS, Ira G.  and  SAAVEDRA, Javier E.. Family cohesion and suicidal ideation in adolescents in the Peruvian coast in 2006. Rev Neuropsiquiatr [online]. 2014, vol.77, n.4, pp.250-261. ISSN 0034-8597.

Objectives: To determine the degree of relationship between death wishes, suicidal ideation and suicidal planning with indicators of family cohesion in adolescents from five cities of the Peruvian coast in 2006. Material and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was based on data from the Epidemiological Study of Mental Health of the Peruvian Coast (Piura, Trujillo, Chimbote, Ica y Arequipa) - 2006, performed through a direct survey of 2390 adolescents and obtained through a three-stage probability sampling. The survey was conducted by properly trained health professionals using the Mental Health Questionnaire, which was adapted in Peru. Descriptive statistical analyzes were performed to calculate frequencies and major trend measures and percentages. F tests of independence were used to evaluate bivariate associations and, logistic regression for adjust multivariate analysis. Results: The lifetime prevalence of death wishes was 26.7%, suicidal ideation 10.8% and suicide planning 4.2%. There was a statistically significant and inverse relationship between indicators of family cohesion and all suicide indicators. Death wishes were significantly higher in women (35.0%) compared to men (15.9%). Conclusions: The obtained data showed an inverse association between suicidal ideation and family cohesion. This finding supports the idea of implementing major prevention efforts within the family and schools in order to identify adolescents at risk of suicide or mental health disorders.
