PEREZ-RINCON GARCIA, Héctor. A memorable story: The Peruvian-Mexican adventures of the Monja Alferez. Rev Neuropsiquiatr [online]. 2016, vol.79, n.4, pp.255-264. ISSN 0034-8597.  http://dx.doi.org/10.20453/rnp.v79i4.2980.

Biographical data and an analysis of the life of Catalina de Erauso, known in History as the Liutenant Religious Sister (Monja Alférez), are presented. A transvestite who served in the Spanish Army and fought in many battles during the Conquest period in América, in territories that now are part of Perú, Chile and México, Catalina led anadventurous, violent and tenacious life, and showed abnormal personality traits as well as explosive behaviors. On many occasions, however, she assumed honestly her gender problems and, for such reason, was admired by many distinguished figures of her time in Spain, Europe and America. After her death, legend has generated numerous interpretations of her life and actions with continuously emerging data and different kinds of informations. The need of additional well designed anthropological studies with eventual socio-cultural, nosological and clinical implications is postulated.

Palabras clave : Transvestism; sexual anhropology; gender problems; identity.
