The category of welfare regime has been applied with critical contributions to study protection schemes in Latin American countries. The article recovers the debates that marked a first stage of mobilization of the category in the European context and the translation that was made from research spaces in Latin American countries to study their own cases. It is discussed how the perspective of welfare regimes and the related conceptual tools were adapted to propose regional and local analyzes of Latin America. Starting from a consideration of how the Argentinian case was read, a debate arises with the traditions that have characterized the regimes of the region as hybrid, incomplete or embryonic; and some possible vectors for a critical update are proposed of those readings. The theoretical review work is based on the recognition of the bibliographic corpus on Latin American welfare regimes.
