Resumen

TRUJILLO CRISTOFFANINI, Macarena  y  CONTRERAS HERNANDEZ, Paola. Gender-based violence: prevalence, sexist imaginaries, and myths among university students. Apuntes [online]. 2021, vol.48, n.88, pp.35-55. ISSN 0252-1865.  http://dx.doi.org/10.21678/apuntes.88.1316.

This is a research whose objective is to identify aspects related to gender-based violence in the Chilean university context, addressing three axes in particular: prevalence of violence against women in heterosexual relationships, the survival of traditional gender constructs, the reproduction of myths about this mistreatment, as well as the sexist imaginaries present in the student's experiences. Theoretical support is given by feminist approaches that have examined the power structures in which these aggressions survive and reproduce, as well as the social dynamics that naturalize them. Studies in the area claim that higher education is not determined as a protective factor against violence nor is it a tool that dismantles the gender imagery that supports it. At a methodological level, 1.120 surveys were applied in three Chilean universities, in which the three axes of analysis already mentioned were addressed. The detailed results show a high percentage of violence against women and, at the same time, they evidence the subsis-tence of myths and sexist imagery that make the reproduction of this type of power relations invisible. In the discussion and conclusions, the role of education and higher education institutions is highlighted when it comes to changes in this area.
