Abstract

CHAVEZ LOPEZ, Paula. From intimacy to reflection: about the ethnographic documentary Xennials. Anthropologica [online]. 2022, vol.40, n.48, pp.67-122.  Epub Aug 29, 2022. ISSN 0254-9212.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18800/anthropologica.202201.003.

In Peru, half of the population are women and they have a longer life expectancy4. They are presented as those who live for others, at all ages, and at all socioeconomic levels. They, therefore, live in «time poverty»5, dedicated to delivering their physical and mental potential, in the private and public spheres (Scuro y Vaca-Trigo, 2017), in a context where patriarchy reigns and rates of gender violence are among the highest in the region. This article intends to make known the use of new methodologies in the production of an ethnographic documentary, which shows how women from Lima of the Xennials6 micro generation, belonging to a very large middle class in Lima, currently perceive and experience their present time, and retrospectively, their past. An emphasis is placed on the application of an experimental methodology used for this study that has allowed a series of findings at various levels: in their interpersonal relationships (family, friends, partners, work) but above all, in an introspective way, by achieving an intimate reflection on this subject. The fieldwork consisted of taking advantage of traditional ethnographic tools, such as in-depth interviews and participant observation, and complementing them with: life stories, timelines, using graphics and manual creativity, as well as personal video diaries narrated by the same protagonists that enrich their own portraits. Although the results are based on the subjectivities of the subjects, it is also possible to show a reflexive dimension (Moore, 2009; Ghasarian, 2008), with a view to self-recognition of their identities in today’s society.

Keywords : Ethnographic cinema; experimental methodology; temporality; gender; reflexivity.
