Resumen

CUBIDES, Pablo; GUILLOT, Javier; REY, David  y  RIVERA, María Lucía. Reference, Proper Names and Linguistic Community. arete [online]. 2010, vol.22, n.2, pp.209-230. ISSN 1016-913X.

Since the publication of Naming and Necessity, many philosophers have assumed that descriptivism concerning the reference of proper names was conclusively refuted by Kripke’s criticisms. The main purpose of this paper is to defend the descriptivist position from those criticisms. First, we present two widespread approaches that have been put forward to solve the problem of proper names: Searle’s descriptivist theory and Kripke’s causal theory. We then articulate a new approach, based on Searle’s theory, in which we introduce several elements designed to overcome Kripke’s objections against descriptivism.

Palabras clave : reference; proper names; descriptivism; Kripke; Searle.
