Abstract

ROJAS PARMA, Lorena. De amore: Socrates and Alcibiades in Plato’s Symposium. arete [online]. 2011, vol.23, n.1, pp.159-188. ISSN 1016-913X.

This article proposes to study the relationship between Socrates and Alcibiades according to Plato’s Symposium. By these means, we seek to reflect upon the other kind of love which Socrates also exemplifies in the dialogue, with the aim of understanding Socrates’ behavior towards Alcibiades beyond the moral contraposition between the spiritual love of contemplation and the earthly love of Alcibiades. Moreover, we aim to present an approach to this relationship without identifying it with a Socratic confirmation of Diotima’s version. To this end, we will not neglect the important homoerotic atmosphere of the dialogue and the epoch.

Keywords : Plato; Socrates; Alcibiades; Eros; Symposium.
