MURILLO JARA, Luis. “Mental Content and the Body as Represented in Action”. arete [online]. 2020, vol.32, n.1, pp.115-136. ISSN 1016-913X. http://dx.doi.org/10.18800/arete.202001.006.
The existence of representations of the body, especially those that would be required to act, has been the subject of long controversies. The objective of this article is to defend the idea that there are representations of the body involved in carrying out daily actions. Our thesis is that what some doubts really show about this type of representation is that they must have a certain type of non-conceptual content. First, we address these doubts, showing that they do not refute the existence of the representations in question. We note that they contain two insights for any characterization of the content of such representations. Thus, we come to propose a characterization such that it adequately accommodates the indicated intuitions. We conclude by examining a possible objection to the proposal and offering a tentative reading of the relationship between mental content and action.
