Objective: To evaluate the clinical and side effects of fenoterol 100 ug/inh metered dose inhaler with spacer devide (MDIS) and salbutamol 100 ug/inh MDIS, both associated to single dose of Dexamethasone IV (0.3 mg/kg). Material and methods: In a prospective, randomized, multicentric study, we included 60 children with acute asthma (30 for each group). The two groups were comparables at the initial evaluation. Results: Fenoterol-Dexamethasone decrease clinical score significatively than Salbutamol - Dexamethasone at 120 minutes (-2.86 vs - 1.25). Like wise it increase Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (p<0.05) significatively than Salbutamol - Dexamethasone at 60 minutes (135 vs 54 respectively). Both respiratory rate and tremor were similar at every time of evaluation. No significative difference were found between the two groups in the amount of discharges from hospital to the end of study (4 hours). Conclusions: We conclude that both Fenoterol - Dexamethasone and Salbutamol - Dexamethasone are equally effective in the management of mild to moderate asthma attacks in children.
