Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate possible risk factors for pre-clampsia. Material y Methods: A prospective, nested case-control study was performed in 88 patients with pre-clampsia and the same number of controls admitted to Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia between March and August of 1993. Results: Risk factors associated with preeclampsia were, previous history of toxemia (OR: 17), elevated body mass index (OR: 9.6), predominantly white race (OR: 6.4), family history of arterial hypertension (OR: 2.5), inadecuate pre-natal control and nuliparity (OR: 2.5). The incidence of pre-clampsia was 4.11%, of this patients 69.3% underwent cesarean section. Overall puerperal complications were present in 28.4% of the cases, being infection the most frequent complication. (Rev Med Hered 1996; 7: 24-31).
