The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia is high in the geriatric population. Objective: Determine the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia and cardiovascular risk factor in people older than 65 years. Material and methods: The serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, VLDL-cholesterol and triglycerides were measured in non-institutionalized 214 elderly subjects (187 women and 27 men) residents in Lima. Results and conclusions: The average serum level of total cholesterol in the participants without cardiovascular risk factors was 222.48 ± 42.60 mg/dl. The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia was 39% (41% in women and 26% in men). LDL-cholesterol≥160 mg/dl was found in 40% of participants and only one person had HDL-cholesterol<35 mg/dl. The most frequent detected cardiovascular risk factors were: arterial hypertension 49.5%, obesity 22.4% and diabetes mellitus 10.2%. The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia in our geriatric population is like the prevalence in foreign populations. The application of the National Cholesterol Education Program Guidelines in our sample showed that 57% needed complete lipid analysis. (Rev Med Hered 1996; 7: 125-131).
