Objective: Detemine the frecuency of dry taps, the diagnosis of underlyng disease and the associated clinical features. Materials and Methods: A descriptive and retrospective study was design. All reports of bone marrow aspirations performed at the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia between January 1, 1990 and March 31, 1996; were reviewed. Results: Among 1358 bone marrow aspirations, 39 were dry taps; this frequency represents 2.9% of cases. The most frequent pathologies were neoplastics myelophtisis in 52.9% of cases, in this group the predominant condition was leukemia in 35.3%. Others diagnosis were acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in 11.8% and medullary aplasia in 11.8%. The 14.7% of cases would be by faulty technique it didn’t have significative medullar pathology al the bone marrow biopsy . Conclusions: The most frequent cause of dry taps were the leukemias. There was not significative difference in laboratory findings such circulating normoblasts and thrombocytopenia that might help to predict marrow pathology in dry tap bone marrow aspirations (Rev Med Hered 1997; 8:50-57).
