Objective: To determine the characteristics of papers published in Revista Médica Herediana. Material and methods: A descriptive and retrospective study was carried out on the papers published in the 26 issues of the Revista Médica Herediana-Lima,Perú, between 1990 y 1996. Results: They were 28 editorials (11.5%), 122 original papers (50.2%), 45 special contributions (18.5%), 36 case reports (14.8%), 7 historical notes (2.9%) y 5 letters to the editor (2.1%). The original papers were: clinical medicine, 111 (90.9%); public health, 7 (5.8%); and, basic sciences, 4 (3.3%). The majority of them were of infectology, nephrology and neumology. It was an average of 3.71 author per paper; 206 authors (73.3%) published just one paper; and, 363 (79.6%) were professors of the peruvian university Cayetano Heredia. The original papers were prospectives, 57 (46.7%) and retrospectives, 65 (53.3%);and the foreigner bibliographic references were 2 898 (87.1%) and the local ones were 431 (12.9%). All 36 case reports corresponded to clinical medicine (infectology, surgery and neurology). The special contributions of clinical medicine were 34 (75.6 %), mainly infectology, nephrology, pathology and surgery. Conclusion: It is concluded that the articles published in the Revista Médica Herediana have the characteristics of those published in the biomedical magazines of underdeveloped countries.
