Objective: To determine the incidence of lupic pericarditis (LP) in patients with Systemic Lupus Erithematosus (SLE) (and its relationship to the all pericarditis), and to determine the clinic, electrocardiographic, radiographic and ecocardiographic features of this disease, and its treatment. Material and methods: A descriptive study, where evaluated the clinic history of 16 patients known to have SLE and pericarditis, seen at the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia between 1985 and 1995. Results: We found 15 female patients and 1 male. The most frequent symptoms and signs were: Extertional dyspnea, fatigue, chest pain and edema. The electrocardiogram showed pericarditis signs in 11 patients, all cases presented cardiomegaly in the chest-X-ray and in 15 patients the ecocardiography examination proved pericardial effusion. The laboratory findings to cast aside the presence of pericarditis different to SLE. Conclusions: LP was observed in 8.9% and represented 19.1% to the all pericarditis, LP was observed in severe active SLE patients. The symptoms, signs, electrocardiographic and radiographic manifestations are inespecific, been the echocardiography the best diagnostic tool in these cases. The treatment was basicaly with steroids and the pericardiocentesis was useful only in one patients. ( Rev Med Hered 1998; 9:109-118 ).
