Objective: To determine whether the dietary protein intake in the first ninety days of hemodialysis (HD) shorts the survival of HD patients. Material and methods: A retrospective cohort was designed. One hundred and six patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD), which began HD between 1990-1995 at the Servicios Médicos CORPAC, were selected. Mean dietary protein intake (DPI) in the first 90 days was obtained from protein catabolic rate (pcr (n)). Other variables in this period were body mass index, hematocrite, adequacy of dialysis (Kt/V), arterial pressure, also variables presents at start HD, sex, age, ESRD etiology, residual renal function and period of start HD. Results: Sixty three (59,4%) were men and 43(40.6%) women. Mean age was 51.6 ± 14.57. Mean pcr(n) was 0.75 ± 0.3 gr/Kg/d. 65.1% patients had low protein intake (£ 0.8 gr/Kg/d). Kaplan-Meyer actuarial survival analysis was made with Log-rank test and Cox regression. Patients with low dietary protein intake in the first ninety days HD had no different survival. Only patients with age ³ 60 years had lower survival. Conclusions: Early daily protein intake in HD ejerced no influence in HD survival. Only age ³ 60 years short HD survival.
