Abstract

DE LA CRUZ DEL SOLAR, Rafael; BARRERA CUADROS, Teresa; VIDAL ESCUDERO, Julio  and  RODRIGUEZ SALAZAR, Isaías. Serologic markers of syphilis, B Hepatitis and HIV in blood donors at the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia, Lima-Peru. Rev Med Hered [online]. 1999, vol.10, n.4, pp.137-143. ISSN 1018-130X.

The great increment of the rates of AIDS in the world had increased the interest of investigators in sexual transmitted diseases. An alternative form of transmission are the transfusions, of there the importance of knowing about methods dedicated to avoid this. Objectives: To determine the seroprevalencia of syphilis, hepatitis B and HIV in blood donors and, to identify distinctive characteristic among seropositive and seronegativos identifying high risk donors. Material and methods: A retrospective descriptive study was elaborated in its first part and case-control in the second part. 12700 donors were included in the study, and 111 seropositive cases with 691 controls were identified in the comparative study. Results: We found a prevalence of 1.06% for VDRL tests (135/12700), 0.81% for hepatitis B (103/12700) and 0.11% for HIV (13/12700). On the other hand, 15.3% (14/91) of seropositives and 12.45% (86/691) of seronegatives had one of the following antecedents at least: transfusions in the 6 previous months, dental extraction, acupuncture or sexual relationships with prostitutes; 427 controls (63.3%) and 47 seropositive (51.6%) were first time blood donors (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The syphilis tests has been questioned, but their use in our means is justified because it allow us identify high risk donors. Our prevalence is not the real for syphilis because the lack of confirmatory test, but it is compatible with other reports. On the other hand, hepatitis B constitutes a small porcentage of post transfusional viral hepatitis but there is many literature in this respect; the value found in our study is compatible with previous reports. The VIH has been incorporated some years ago as a risk for transfusions. The values that we report are similar to previous studies, staying higher in comparison to reports in neighboring countries.
