Abstract

There are few studies done about image of psychoactive drugs. Objectives: To describe the attitude of the Latin-American health professionals towards psychopharmacological drug prescriptions, the treatment preference for psychiatric diseases and the attitude of the patients towards psychopharmacological drug prescriptions based on physician opinion. Material and methods: An descriptive, transversal, comparative and prospective study was performed. A inquest for depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, bipolar disorder, epilepsy, pharmacodependence, alcoholism, obsesive-compulsive disorder, phobias and personality and feeding disorders was performed. We design an attitudinal scale conformed for 27 Lickert-like ordinal items. Results: For the negative aspects, we found significative differences between the groups (p<0.001), 2.15±0.58 and 3.05±0.73 points for the psychiatrists and psychologists, respectively. For the positive aspects, we found significative differences between the goups (p<0.001) too; 3.99±0.52 vs 3.20 ±0.64 points for psychiatrists and psychologists, respectively. On the attitude towards prescriptions, the psychiatrists and psychologists were different to non psychiatrist physicians, the latest showed major opinion that psychopharmacological drugs were bad administered. The combined use of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy were accepted for the studied groups, being major in psychologist. The preference for mental sickness treatments, showed significative difference between the studied groups in all diseases. The physicians indicated that the patients accepted psychopharmacological drugs with objections and non convinced, in first and second place, respectively. On the attitude of patients towards psychopharmacological drugs prescriptions, apprehension to treatment dependent occupied the first place, the lost treatments by family advised in second place and the lost treatments for drug adverse effects, in third place.
