TAPIA ZEGARRA, Gino Guillermo; CHIRINOS CACERES, Jesús Luis and TAPIA ZEGARRA, Lenibet Miriam. Características sociodemográficas y clínicas de los pacientes diabéticos tipo 2 con infecciones adquiridas en la comunidad admitidos en los servicios de Medicina del Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2000, vol.11, n.3, pp.89-96. ISSN 1018-130X.
Objective: To determine the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics related to type 2 diabetics with community-acquired infections admitted to medicine wards at Cayetano Heredia National Hospital (HNCH). Material and methods: A retrospective, case series study was conducted, including one hundred and five type 2 diabetics without any comorbidity associated with hyperglycemia, immunosupression or anatomical distortion of normal barriers to infections. They were chosen randomly from the discharge registry obtained at the medicine wards of HNCH between 1991 and 1998. Results: Illiteracy and primary level (60%) were the predominant levels of education achieved. On the other hand, 72.4% of the patients followed some type of treatment, being irregular in adherence 89.5% of them. Peripheral neuropathy (87.5%) and III°-V° grade nephropathy (87.3%) were the most frequent complications found. The main foci of infections were the soft tissues and urinary tract. The mean lenght of hospital stay was 17.33 days, being longer among those with sepsis wich reached statistical significance (p=0.036). According to available lab results, half of them had a serum albumin/serum globulin ratio flip and more than half had dyslipidemia. Conclusions: Type 2 diabetics with community-acquired infections admitted to medicine wards at HNCH present mostly a low level of education. We found frequent micro and macrovascular complications, serum albumin/serum globulin ratio flip and dyslipidemia. The lenght of hospital stay was prolonged, mainly among those patients with sepsis.
