Abstract

MENDOZA REQUENA, Daniel et al. Factores asociados al ingreso a medicina en la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia y sus tendencias durante el periodo 1994-1999. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2001, vol.12, n.1, pp.8-15. ISSN 1018-130X.

Objective: To identify some academic, personal and social factors associated to entering time to the School of Medicine Alberto Hurtado at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia and to describe trends of characteristics of new students from 1994 through 1999. Material and Methods: This is an analytic cross-sectional study. Data were collected from the secondary school records requested to every new student. Results: The students from private schools entered to the university younger and earlier than the other students (p<0.001). The students whose parents are physicians also entered earlier (p=0.03). The students from CEPU entered earlier than the other students (p<0.001). The entering time is lower when the qualification in mathematics is higher (p<0.001). The women/men ratio increased from 0.26 in 1994 to 0.62 in 1999 (p<0.001); also the younger than 17 years, raised from 4% in 1995 to 18% in 1999 (p<0.001). The percentage of new students from provincial schools and the students whose parents were physicians did not changed. Women have higher scores than men in all secondary school courses (p<0.001). Conclusion: The students from private schools, physicians’ son, with higher qualifications in mathematics and entering through CEPU enter earlier to School of Medicine in UPCH. Also during the studied period, entering students are younger and female. ( Rev Med Hered 2001; 12: 8-15 ).
