Self-medication in low-income populations is one of the main problems of public health. This may increase the adverse reactions, antimicrobial resistance and costs, causing in the person an elevated, avoidable, expensive and ineffective risk. Objective: To determine the characteristics of self-medication in the rural area of Cajamarca. Material and methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out between December 1999 and January 2000. A survey was applied to 384 households selected in a systematic way with proportional probability to the size; the sampling was probabilistic and multistage. Results: Self-medication was reported at 36.19% of homes, acquiring some medication 66.18% of them in a private pharmacy. There was no significant difference in relation to the variables sex, occupation and educational level of the head of the house, as well as its affiliation to a health insurance. Association was found between income greater than 300 nuevos soles and self-medication. The reason most frequently by the population to self-medicate was: "I already know what they prescribe" (41.72%). Conclusions: Self-medication is a common problem in rural areas of Cajamarca. Drugs are usually bought at are acquired in private pharmacies. Association was only found between self-medication and homes with income greater than 300 nuevos soles.
