Objective: To describe the actual status of the Research in Geriatrics and Gerontology in Peru and then identify the wide area need to be investigated. Material and methods: This is a transversal and descriptive study of the thesis, articles and publications in Geriatrics and Gerontology that have been made in Peru between 1980 and 2001. A keywords use searching method and a selection based in the compliment of the methodological process steps were used. Results: 256 Geriatrics and Gerontology Research papers were found, 30 (11.7%) of them were of Gerontology and 226 (88.3%) were of Geriatrics. A great proportion of those papers were made at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (47.9%) and Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (23.7%) in Lima, followed by Universidad Nacional San Agustín of Arequipa. Only 19.2% of research studies were published. The pregrade theses (69.2%) were more than the postgraduate theses. We found a great percentage of works in surgical areas (12.1%), infection areas (10.2%) and nursing areas (9.8%); we also found a great proportion of transversal works (55.1%), followed by retrospectives works (29.8%). Conclusions: The Geriatrics and Gerontology Research papers mainly surround the clinical area, only a 19.2% of these works were been published, the pregrade theses were the principal way to investigate and the great proportion of the research were made by descriptive and transversal works.
