Abstract

The prevalence of obesity in children and adolescent is having a progressive increase in the world.Objective: To describe the distribution of the body mass index and to determine the prevalence of obesity in 6 to 10 years old pre puberal scholars from San Martin de Porres - Lima. Material and Methods: We selected randomly 6 to 10 years old pre puberal children of six public elementary school from San Martin de Porres, Lima and were divided in five groups of age. Results: In boys, prevalence of overweight and obesity was 9.90% and 5.57% respectively, in girls prevalence of overweight and obesity was 5.55% and 9.78% respectively, without statistical differences between sex. The prevalence of obesity showed statistical difference respect to prevalence of obesity in the NHANES III report of 1994. Conclusion: We conclude a high prevalence of overweight (9.96%) and low prevalence of obesity (5.62%) in pre puberal children 6 to 10 years old of elementary school from San Martin de Porres, Lima, and recommend use of the distribution table of BMI from our study.
