Abstract

Objective: To determine the sociodemographic characteristics of patients with type 2 Diabetes mellitus followed up in the General Medicine office and Diabetes Program at Hospital II EsSALUD-Cañete and its relationship with the glycemia. Material and Methods: A descriptive, case series study was conducted, including ninety four patients with type-2 Diabetes randomly chosen at the time of their outpatient office visit where an interview and planned physical examination took place during the months of June and July 2001. Results: The mean age was 64.56 + 11.61. Fifty three patients were women (56.4%). Illiteracy and primary level (51.3%) were the predominant levels of education achieved. On the other hand, 68.1% of the patients followed treatment with oral agents and 11.7% required the use of insulin. Conclusions: Patients with Type-2 Diabetes followed up at Hospital II EsSALUD-Cañete mostly present a low level of education. We found the best glycemic control with the higher level of education achieved. (Rev Med Hered 2004; 15: 19-23).
