Abstract

Objective: To have some epidemiological information and direct and indirect economical costs of traffic accident cases that were taken care in the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia. Material and Methods: The medical histories of cases that took place from June 1st 2000 to May 31Th 2001 were checked. The epidemiological information considered was number of injured people, age and sex, month, anatomic regions injured, anatomic scales (M.A.I.S. and A.I.S) and the hierarchical classification of injuries. The direct costs of medical care and indirect costs by future production loss because of death and daily production loss because of injuries were estimated. Results: Two thousand and one cases were identified. The average age was twenty nine years old and men were the most damaged. 844 (42%) cases of Passenger Traffic Accident and 1,157 (58%) of Pedestrian Traffic Accident were found. Sixty three percent of serious cases and seventy eight percent of fatalities were associated with Pedestrian Traffic Accident. Eighty nine percent cases were AIS 1 and six percent as AIS 2. The direct costs were S/ 1592621 (US$ 455,035) and the indirect costs were S/. 1’128,028 (US$ 322,294). Conclusions: The population in active economic age were the most damaged by traffic accidents.
