Abstract

REY DE CASTRO MUJICA, Jorge; ALVAREZ MAYORGA, Jimy  and  GAFFO LLONTOP, Angelo. Symptoms related to sleep disorders in a healthy-supposed population that attend a primary Care Health Center. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2005, vol.16, n.1, pp.31-38. ISSN 1018-130X.

Objective: To evaluate symptoms related to sleep disorders in a healthy-supposed population. Material and Methods: Cross-over and descriptive in healthy-supposed adults that attend a primary health center. A self-administered questionnaire was developed for the study. 2002. The final sample of 590 subjects corresponds to 28% of the general population who is older than 17 years and lives in the influence area. Results: mean age was 32.21+10.62 (16-74) years, 318 (54%) men and the mean BMI was 25.25+3.75 (16.5-39.8) Kg/m2. There were 27% (84/315) males and 18% (50/269) females who claimed to be snorers. Eleven percent (37/313) males and 16% (43/264) females referred respiratory pauses during sleep. Thirty percent (96/316) males and 31% (84/271) females acknowledged sleepiness. Difficulty in falling asleep was described in 61% (194/318) males and 60% (162/269) females. For the subjects with frequent awakenings, the frequencies were 41% (126/307) and 46% (119/258) respectively. Fifty nine percent (189/318) males and 55% (147/266) females woke up earlier than expected. There were Restless Legs Syndrome symptoms suspected in 36% (111/307) males and 32% (82/255) females. Twenty four percent (77/315) males and 23% (62/268) females referred symptoms related to night mioclonus. Thirty three percent (196) accepted that they had troubles with their sleep. Only 16% (32/196) went to the doctor for this reason. Conclusions: these results show the high frequency of symptoms related to various sleep disorders, the changes observed due to gender and age. The small relevance that patients as well as physicians give this subject deserves educational interventions in both cases.
