Objective: To determine association between Helicobacter pylori infection and the histological findings of the gastric mucosa biopsies that were negatives to neoplasic pathology. Material and Methods: We conducted a retrospective descriptive study of gastric mucosa biopsies that were negatives to neoplasic pathology. The biopsies were carried out at the Gastroenterology Division of the Clínica Médica Cayetano Heredia between January 1, 1999, and July, 31, 2002.Results:We reviewed 676 gastric mucosa biopsies that were negatives to neoplasic pathology. The mean age was 45.12 years. There were not significant differences by sex. The most frequent histological findings were: Superficial chronic gastritis, 498 cases (73.7%); active gastritis, 464 cases (68.6%); deep chronic gastritis, 90 (13.3%); atrophic gastritis, 93 (13.7%); normal gastric mucosa, 79 (11.7%); mucous damage, 508 (75.1%); intestinal metaplasia, 123 (18.2%); positive lymphoid nodules, 372 (55%); dysplasia, 9 (1.18%). Furthermore, we found a frequency of Helicobacter pylori infection of 64.78% and a statistically significant difference between Helicobacter pylori infection and gastritis, activity of gastritis, mucous damage and lymphoid nodules. Conclusions: The most frequent histological finding was superficial chronic gastritis. The frequency of normal gastric biopsies was low. The frequency of Helicobacter pylori infection, was similar to the results reported in the international literature. (Rev Med Hered 2005;16:89-96).
