Abstract

PAJUELO CAMACHO, Giovanni; LUJAN ROCA, Daniel  and  PAREDES PEREZ, Bertha. Study of enteroparasites at the Hospital de Emergencias Pediátricas, Lima-Perú.. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2005, vol.16, n.3, pp.178-183. ISSN 1018-130X.

Objective: To determine the frequency of intestinal parasitoses at the Hospital de Emergencias Pediátricas, Lima, Perú. Material and methods: A prospective cross-sectional study carried out from May to June 2003, that it included 108 pediatric patients between 11 months to 11 years of age. A fecal sample was examinaded by subject by means of three parasitological test: Direct microscopy, Faust technique and Spontaneous Tube Sedimentation Technique. Results: The frequency of intestinal parasitosis was of 50.9%. The most frequent protozoan was Blastocystis hominis (34.3%) followed by Giardia duodenalis (10.2%). The most frequent helminth was Ascaris lumbricoides (6.5%) followed by Hymenolepis nana (4.6%). Among the diagnostic methods, the Spontaneous Tube Sedimentation Technique detected most parasites more efficiently. Conclusion: The high frequency of intestinal parasitoses would be related to inadequate sanitary conditions present in some districts of Lima, associated to the population’s socioeconomic and cultural factors.
