Abstract

Objectives: To elucidate the etiology of fetal death, and to identify its sociodemographic, clinical and pathologics characteristics, and its rate. Material and methods: A descriptive study was conducted. Cases of fetal death were review on Register Book of the obstetrician service of Hospital Nacional Arzobispo Loayza between August 2003 to November 2004. The clinical and pathology reports were described. Results: There were sixty one cases of fetal death. Forty seven were analyzed. The fetal death rate was 13,48 per 1000 births. Mean gestational age was 28,29 weeks. Mean weight was 1,277.86 g. Age less than 35 years (76.59%), no antenatal care or inadequate antenatal care (66.66%), parity more than 4 (86.96%), previous abortion (21.73%), small for gestational age (28,26%), third trimester bleeding (17.39%), preeclampsia (8.69%) and abnormal phatologics findings of placenta (23.28%) were the most frequent sociodemographic, clinical and pathologics characteristics. 59.27% of the fetal death had a pathology report. Unexplained fetal death was elucidated in 36.17 % of cases. Conclusions: The clinical and pathologics datas were not enough to elucidate clearly the etiology of fetal death.
