Abstract
LUJAN ROCA, Daniel Angel and PAJUELO CAMACHO, Giovanni Rodolfo. Pyuria in microscopic exam of uncentrifuged urine: Its association to urinary tract infection. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2006, vol.17, n.2, pp.68-73. ISSN 1018-130X.
Objective: To study the clinical application of pyuria detection in uncentrifuged urine and its association with urinary tract infection. Material and methods: Urine samples of 182 patients were evaluated. A microscopic exam was carried out and urine culture. Pyuria was defined like presence > 5 white blood cells/high power field. Results: Sensibility was 25.8%, specificity 94.7%, positive predictive value 50.0% and negative predictive value 86.1%. Conclusions: Pyuria presence has a limited value to detect ill people; but pyuria absence is useful to define people without urinary tract infection. (Rev Med Hered 2006;17:74-76).
Keywords : Pyuria; urinary tract infection; urine culture.
