Objective: To determine attitudes toward prevention and health promotion in medical students. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study. We evaluated 608 medical students from January to March 2001, through a survey validated previously, that evaluated students’ attitudes toward prevention and health promotion, and demographics, educational and personals characteristics. Results: 45.4% of medical students reached suitable attitudes toward prevention and health promotion. There was no statistically difference in students’ attitudes of several years of study. Neither there was statistical association among the demographic variables nor educational toward prevention and health promotion. Significant correlation was shown between attitudes toward prevention and health promotion and personal attitudes toward social dimension of illness (p<0.001), and attitudes toward caring for the poor (p<0.001). Both attitudes acted as predictors so that joint and independently. Conclusions: Attitudes of medical students toward prevention and health promotion are adequate in less half of them. Factors associated more important are for attitudes toward the student toward social problems and the care of the poor person (Rev Med Hered 2006;17:81-89).
