LOHMANN GANDINI-BILLINGHURST, Pablo; RODRIGUEZ ESPINOZA, Manuel; WEBB LINARES, Verónica  e  ROSPIGLIOSI LOPEZ, Maria Luz. Mortality among newborns with extreme low body weight at birth from the neonatology unit at the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2006, vol.17, n.3, pp.141-147. ISSN 1018-130X.

Objective: To identify the demographic and clinical conditions more frequently present in dead patients with extremely low birth weight, in the neonatology unit of Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia (HNCH). Material and methods: The following study is a case series. We reviewed the epicrisis and NEOCOSUR database of the patients born weighting under 1000g, and whose death occurred during hospitalization in the Neonatology Unit, from January 2000 to December 2004. Results: A total of 99 patients were obtained, with incomplete registries in 12 of them (12% of the sample), making a total of 87 eligible study subjects. Mortality in these patients varies from 70-85% and the following clinical conditions were found: inadequate prenatal care, gestational age under 27 weeks, lack of use of antenatal steroids, lack of surfactant therapy, hyaline membrane disease-respiratory distress syndrome and intracraneal hemorrhage. Conclusions: Antenatal steroids, surfactant therapy and prenatal care constitute intervention levels with probable impact on mortality. Hyaline membrane disease-respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis and intracraneal hemorrhage were the most frequently associated conditions. This study allows hypotheses to be formulated, which will need further observational and analytical studies to be evaluated. (Rev Med Hered 2006;17:141-147).
