Abstract

REY DE CASTRO MUJICA, Jorge; FERREYRA PEREYRA, Jenny  and  ROSALES MAYOR, Edmundo. A simplified method for the diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSA): With regard to a case series using the respiratory polygraph BREAS SC-20.. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2007, vol.18, n.2, pp.59-67. ISSN 1018-130X.

Objective: We report series of patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) diagnosed with a respiratory polygraph (RP). Materials and methods: We present the results of 53 RPs made between January 2005 and October 2006. All patients had the suspicions of sleep breathing disorders. We used the polygraph BREAS SC-20 that we validated in a previous report. The test was implemented through the night in patient’s home without technical supervision. In 32 (60%) cases the device was installed in the physician’s office and the rest at patient’s home. Results: We analyzed 53 RPs, made in the same number of patients. The acquisition failed in 6 (11%) and the tests were repeated in a second opportunity with good results. Registry time was 7.7±1.1 [5.5-10.7] hours, apnea-hipopnea Index (AHI) 35.5±20 [0-82], percentage of registry time with SatO2 below 90% (T90) 9.8±15.2 [0-62] % and maximum oxygen desaturation 73±14.8 [38-91] %. The diagnoses were: OSA 46 (86%), central apnea with periodic Cheyne Stokes pattern 3 (6%), primary snore 2 (4%) and normal test 2 (4%). The procedure was well tolerated and there were not related side effects. Conclusions: According to our results, we consider that the BREAS SC-20 system is a useful, practical and economic tool for the diagnosis of OSA; under the supervision of sleep breathing disorders trained physicians.(Rev Med Hered 2007;18:59-67).
