Abstract

ROMERO MEZARINA, Luis Germán et al. Knowledge and attitudes of gynaecologists-obstetricians of Lima and Callao, towards action mechanisms and prescription of the emergency contraception pill. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2007, vol.18, n.2, pp.92-99. ISSN 1018-130X.

Objectives: To evaluate the level of knowledge and attitudes of obstetrician-gynaecologists who work at Ministerio de Salud hospitals of Lima and Callao towards Emergency Contraception (AOE). Materials and Methods: A prospective descriptive cross-sectional study involving obstetrician-gynaecologists of nine hospitals at Lima and Callao was done, involving a representative random sample of 94 specialists. A structured questionnaire was applied based on former experiences and previous "expert" validity. Results: 100% of interviewed had heard about AOE. Only 18% knew the three mechanisms of action described on the literature, 82% referred properly the mode of administration and 72% knew the time on which to be used. 71% referred to be willing to prescribe it, however 66% mentioned had prescribed it previously and 83% referred to mentioned it, at different degree, as part of their routine counseling towards contraception. However 31% considered that emergency contraception has an abortive mechanism and 20% is not willing to use it in his partner or herself. Conclusions: We observed a high percentage of obstetrician-gynaecologists being sensitized with this issue, knowing its usage mode, the main adverse events and contraindications, however they have low knowledge about its mechanisms of action. Further studies need to be done in general population, and educational interventions to improve quality of health professionals. (Rev Med Hered 2007;18:92-99).
