BAMBAREN ALATRISTA, Celso Vladimir and ALATRISTA GUTIERREZ, María del Socorro. Estimation of the socioeconomic impact of the earthquake of Pisco on the Peruvian health sector. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2009, vol.20, n.2, pp.177-184. ISSN 1018-130X.
Objective: To determine the value of damages and losses on the health care sector due to the earthquake that occurred on August 15th 2008 in Huancavelica, Ica and Lima. Material and methods: Assessment reports and information about the actions that were taken by public and non-public health organizations during response and recovery phases. This material was used to calculate the effect on goods and economic flows in the health sector. Results: The economic impact of the earthquake reached 139,1 million dollars, 95% was related to damages on health care facilities and 5% was due to losses. Conclusions: It is necessary to establish a national strategy of safe hospitals in order to reduce the investment spent on the recovery of damaged health care facilities, as well as to assure the affected population continues to receive attention during the emergency phase.
