The literature of the last 15 years was reviewed to document the facts of this paper. In this place the characteristics of the metabolic syndrome are summarized along with the natural history of Diabetes Mellitus II. The importance of insulin resistance in striated muscle is detailed as well as reviewed the mitochondrial factor. Currently Diabetes Mellitus II is taken to be an inflammatory disease, this issue is also reviewed. And finally we discuss the role of excess insulin in generating the late complications of Diabetes Mellitus II. (Rev Med Hered 2010;21:160-170).
