Abstract

CASTILLO DE LA CADENA, Luis et al. Cardiac hydatid cyst in a child: A case report. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2012, vol.23, n.1, pp.36-40. ISSN 1018-130X.

Hydatid cyst is a human parasitic disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. Prevalence of human hydatid disease in Peru during the last 5 years ranges from 7-11 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The disease is mainly localized in the liver (>65% of cases) and in the lungs (25%). Involvement of the heart is rare, reported in 0.5-2% of cases. We present the case of an 11-year-old child with cardiac hydatidosis successfully removed using extracorporeal circulation and aortic cross-clamp.

Keywords : Cardiac hydatid cyst; diagnostic; surgery; heart; Echinoccocosis.
