RAMIREZ-VELA, Rosa; CIEZA-ZEVALLOS, Javier; PINTO-VALDIVIA, Miguel  and  MEDINA-PALOMINO, Félix. Correlation of carotid intima media thickness with lipid profile and other cardiovascular risk factors in patients on chronic hemodialysis. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2012, vol.23, n.2, pp.80-87. ISSN 1018-130X.

Objective: To determine the relationship between biochemical and clinical factors with carotid-wall intima-media thickness in patients with end-stage renal disease in hemodialysis. Material and methods: Fifty adult subjects with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and regular hemodialysis (>6 months, thrice a week) at the Hemodialysis Center of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia were included. Subjects with history of hypothyroidism, chronic liver disease or previous use of statins were excluded. Doppler carotid wall intima-media thickness (CIMT) was used as marker of atherosclerosis. Baseline fasting plasma levels for total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, calcium, phosphorus, PTH, and albumin were measured. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression for modeling the relationship between biochemical and clinical variables with CIMT (dependent-variable). Results: The mean age was 60 ± 19.6 and 42% were female. Hypertension was present in 90% of patients and diabetes was the cause of ESRD in 38%. In the bivariate analysis PTH and total cholesterol were related with wider CIMT. By multiple regression analysis, age, smoking, and HDL cholesterol were related with CIMT (p= 0.002). Conclusion: In patients with ESRD and hemodialysis, smoking, age, and HDL cholesterol are related with wider CIMT.

Keywords : Carotid intima-media thickness; dyslipidaemia; atherosclerosis; hemodialysis.
