Abstract

Objective: To determine the effect of an educational intervention on preventing oral mucositis in patients receiving chemotherapy. Methods: Pre-experimental and quantitative study. Study sample was non-probabilistic. An structured questionnaire was used to evaluate knowledge on cancer, oral mucositis and preventive measures. Data collection was gathered between December 2010 and February 2011. Interventions were conducted in three sessions using demonstration to the patient and relatives, and included sensitization about cancer and its relationship with oral mucositis, preventive measures, preparation of mouthwash solutions, and use of oral criotherapy. Paired student´s t-test was used checking for normal distribution, McNemar´s test was also used; P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 50 subjects were evaluated; knowledge increased from 12% in the pre-test to 82% in the area of general aspects, and to 92% in the area of preventive measures. Conclusions: Educational interventions are effective in increasing knowledge of participating patients
